Validity Studies

Validity -When referring to assessments (tests), is defined as the degree to which the assessment (test) measures what it is supposed to measure.

Anyone can sit down and write questions, create a computer program to score it, and start selling tests to the unsuspecting public. Therefore, your first question BEFORE investing in any test should be:

"How do you KNOW the test you are offering to my company is measuring what it is supposed to be measuring?"

Legitimate psychometricians (test designers) will provide you with a VALIDITY STUDY outlining evidence that the test does, in fact, measure what it appears to measure.

Most of these Studies are completed by independent third parties recognized as experts in conducting such research. For example The Hiring Suite™ Validity Studies were conducted by PhD industrial psychologists and statisticians at the University of North Texas.

Pre-employment tests are valid for predicting some variables but not valid at all for predicting other variables. Good examples of unmeasurable variables are violence or psychotic conditions which cannot be predicted by a stand alone paper/pencil instrument.

Validity Studies are expensive, time-consuming, and difficult research projects requiring professional expertise. They are, however, essential if test scores are to be accurately used and interpreted for pre-employment purposes.
